Open mic — Ye Olde Royal Oak (7)

On a hot summer night there weren’t many people present, but it was a good audience. Tony emceed tonight. Here’s what I played —

1. I’ll Press On (original)
2. Fortress (original)
3. I For You (original)
4. Dirty Old Mug (original) — Tony said, “Two more minutes…” This one is about that long.

5. Saved by Zero/All Along the Watchtower (The Fixx/Dylan)
6. We Never Said Goodbye (original) — played this one for the first time
7. I Need You (original)

8. With or Without You (U2)
9. Highways Heading Home (original)

Gearing up for a show later this month, I wanted to play a lot of original music, but I couldn’t resist a few covers. Combining “Saved by Zero” and “All Along the Watchtower” works surprisingly well. After playing “Saved by Zero” I launch into “All Along the Watchtower,” interposing “Maybe I’ll win, saved by zero…” between verses. I like playing U2’s “With or Without You” with my own song, “Highways Heading Home,” as they hit upon similar themes. (They’re both in C too.) I’m considering changing the name of “I For You” to something else; it’s an awkward title.
